Caving
Caving comes in various degrees of difficulty from very easy horizontal walk in caves to very difficult vertical pit caves in Missouri. According to the last published reports in April 2023, the state of Missouri is home to over 7, 500 documented caves, the vast majority of them are south of the Missouri River.
Stygian Grotto has been previously involved in and continues to be active in various activities such as Cave Surveying and Mapping, Cave Gating, Cave Restoration, Archaeological Preservation, Cave Search & Rescue, Youth and Community Education.
Stygian Grotto was a significant contributor to the Picture Cave Project and was responsible for the construction of the gates that preserve the cave for future generations of study. For more information, the book Picture Cave is available for purchase.
Trips afield and underground are arranged typically on weekends. Other trips are occasionally scheduled in conjunction with activities involving other organizations such as The Missouri Cave and Karst Conservancy (MCKC), The Missouri Speleological Survey (MSS), The Cave Research Foundation (CRF), Missouri Stream Teams and various state and county park departments.
